April 17, 2011 Mixing update

Today I realized I’ve entered into a third season of making this record. We’ve survived the fall and winter recording sessions and now spring has brought us the fruits of our labor. Having 14 wonderful little songs to work with, the final image is starting to form (though one is 9 minutes long- little she is not). We are MIXING and getting very excited about all the shapes and spaces.

To further personify this album, I need to take a cue from Tom Waits and the woman who wrote Eat Pray Love- which I haven’t read, but I bring up because I know (thanks to my love, Radiolab) that they both whisper and/or scream directly to their art. Tom- as you would expect him to- apparently yells in the studio and demands things from his most difficult songs until they succomb. The EPL lady, perhaps more respectfully, asks her book quite calmly, “Sweetheart, what is your name?” and wakes up the next day with the title to her book.

Every day brings me closer to finalizing the tracklisting and giving all these songs their rightful place in or outside of this album- and they all continue to energize me and ready me for another bout of touring. I haven’t had a break from gigs like this in years.
